Automation

In the building I'm working in now, there is an "old section" and a "new section". The old section is decked out like a 1940's bomb shelter. Old school cubicles, office designs, Tornado Shelter signs in all the hallways. Solid brick walls, etc. It was built during World War II.

The new part of the building was built more recently. And it's extremely automated. The toilets flush on sensors when you stand up. The faucets and soap dispensers only run when your hands are under them. But there's no way to regulate the flow, temperature or amount of the things you're getting.

And the drinking fountains. They're on sensors, too. I haven't quite figured those out, yet. I haven't been able to successfully drink from the taller drinking fountains. I have to walk around in a tiny half-circle around the shorter drinking fountain until I find the exact right spot where the water seems to kick on and then lean over until I can reach the spigot. I'm sure I look kind of ridiculous. But you know what? The shit doesn't work if you stand right in front of it. It's also on a timer. So it will cut out right in the middle of when you're drinking. Because apparently, the average duration of a drink of water is about eight seconds. After it goes off, you have to start the whole rain dance over again.

It trips me out. And I don't like it. They have replaced some very small personal freedoms, like controlling the duration of our drinks of water or the water temperature we like to wash our hands under, with automation and alchemy. How are you supposed to figure that shit out? And who does it really benefit?
