I can't really get on board with the other, deeper issues thing, but I *do* have a lot of clutter. And it plain pisses me off sometimes. I got more and more pissed off as the article continued. I started thinking about my closets and drawers and corners. The dark places you never want anyone to look. The secret places you're afraid to dig into, because if you enter, you'll never emerge.
Anyway. The end result was me going to Target and buying one of those plastic hanging folder file boxes. And some hanging files. Tonight, I grabbed a huge bag full of old bills, junk mail, important papers, last year's tax stuff, and miscellaneous garbage and starting sorting it. Then I attacked some of the piles in the corner.
I ended up with two bags full of garbage, and just a few things I actually needed to keep. I diligently filed them away in the plastic box. Now, if I want to find instruction manuals or warranty information, I look in that folder. If I want to find tax information for 2000, I look in THAT folder.
I know that some people have had filing systems like this for years. But this is a first for me. And it kind of eases my mind. My normal filing system is organized piles. I know where I throw things when I get them. So it's a question of searching through a pile to get what I want. The problem is that we're moving in two weeks. And when you move, there's no way your memory can keep up with where everything went. I don't want to lose anything REALLY important, thus the file box.
And that, my friends, is all.
